Pflueger - A Brief History

A BRIEF HISTORY

MANUFACTURERS TURNED PIONEERS

The Pflueger family legacy in the fishing tackle industry has traced its roots back to 1880 when Earnest F. Pflueger founded the Enterprise Manufacturing Company in Akron, Ohio.  While initially investing the manufacturing resources into a variety of novelties, including tin rosettes for the harness of horses, Earnest soon turned his focus to artificial baits for fisherman.

Following the success of these baits, Earnests' son, Earnest A. Pflueger, took over and it did not take long for the plant to reallocate all its resources towards making tackle, rods, flies, minnows and other fishing industry staples. In fact, the factory became the largest plant in the world for the manufacturing of hooks, reaching up to several hundred million a year.

Earnest A. always maintained an interest in the sport of fishing, but his dedication extended far beyond just the manufacturing of its gear. He was also involved in several organizations, including the Manufacturers’ Association of Fishing Tackle of the US and the Akron Chamber of Commerce.

Throughout the years, Earnest and his family continued to innovate and expand their products, incorporating new materials and designs to meet the growing and ever-evolving needs of the fishing community. Pflueger is even on record for issuing over 50 patents in the industry, including the most notable and game-changing in 1883 that included the use of phosphorescent paint on artificial lures.

Pflueger - A Brief History

A BRIEF HISTORY

SETTING THE BAR (AND THE HOOK)

To say that Pflueger’s 1883 paint patent revolutionized the fishing lure market would be an understatement. Earnest Pflueger noted that many kinds of fish, especially those of the larger and voracious variety, lie secluded during the daylight and seek out food as darkness approaches. At the time, the baits in ordinary use were not well equipped to be seen or taken by this fish during these hours in the day and that “gaudy, brilliant, or rapidly moving objects” would be most attractive to fish.

His subsequent discovery and inclusion of phosphorous paint, AKA “glow-in-the-dark paint”, on artificial lures spurred significant growth in the fishing industry and resulted in an exponentially higher number of fish hooked. This paint could be applied to many mediums including leather, cork, metal, wood, rubber, pearl, and glass, making it both functional and versatile.

Beyond this advancement in lures, the company would go on to develop other industry benchmark items, such as the Pflueger baitcast reel released in 1916. Shortly after that, the Pflueger spinning reel was introduced in 1954 and since then, Pflueger has produced products including the Pflueger Akron, Summit, President, and Supreme reels that continue to impress within the fishing community today.

Following the success of these baits, Earnests' son, Earnest A. Pflueger, took over and it did not take long for the plant to reallocate all its resources towards making tackle, rods, flies, minnows and other fishing industry staples.
